Experiments

11-8-10
After the shower was over I realized that I had more pears then I knew what to do with. And a few of them were about on their last leg. So I experimented and made a whole wheat pear tart! It was good. Not to sweet, which was nice. I was afraid the whole wheat may over take some of the pear flavor but it worked out well!

Apple Pie
So....I thought, I have a big bag of apples, I can make things other than apple sauce and apple bread...lets bring out the big guns and make an apple pie! ha! Well, I made it. It was edible. I just got way ahead of myself and put the top of the crust I made on it before I added any of the buttery, sugary goodness. So I put it on the very top. lol Didnt turn out like I wanted it to. Actually not at all. I was so proud of myself for making the crust and getting it in the pan unbroken, that I just kept going and put the pastry top on. It still tasted good. It was just a little hard for some reason. The insides that I put on the very top :) turned out to be so hard that it took a few bangs to get through it haha. O well, better luck next time I guess. If there is a next time. Im not going to give up Im just going to try a different recipe. If it turns out, Ill let you see it. If not Im not sharing my humiliation again :)

I felt so proud until the moment I realized what I'd done. Dawson was sweet as usual and went and got some Vanilla ice cream and ate half of it anyway :) Better luck next time.

Question: I have an horrible time with biscuits. They never rise and get nice and fluffy for me. Anyone have a secret they would like to share???

So, not last night but the night before, Josiah got up every hour starting at 2 am. By about 5am I was not going to even try to lay back down, so I started baking :) I should probably find another way to channel my frustration and sleepless mornings but as for right now this is working. I ended up making Pumpkin Muffins and Fig, Orange, Whole Wheat Muffins! By about 8 am my kitchen was a disaster area but it was all worth it when I was able to wake my sleeping husband up with fresh muffins and a big glass of milk! Enjoy!

We have a fig tree in our side yard and I watched it all summer as it bore fruit for the first time! I did my best to grab what little ripened before all of the little animals around my house got to them. Hopefully next year I will be able to get more to experiment with!

The recipe called for pecans but walnuts were all that I had and they turned out really well!

I added some chocolate chips to half of the Pumpkin batter and sent it to the fire station with my husband this morning.

Vanilla Bean Scone....mmmmm

I did a trial run of these this afternoon, This recipe is on the menu for a shower I am throwing in a few weeks! At first I thought that they were way to sweet, of course Dawson thought differently :) They are pretty cakey (sp?), and make much more that the recipe says. Super easy and they don't take that long! I didn't buy enough vanilla though and tried to go with just 2 instead of the 3 it calls for. When I make them next time I am definitely going to do all 3! Enjoy!

Lemon Cupcakes

So, today is my husband first day at his new station, and he wanted to bring something for all of the guys on his shift. So lemon cupcakes it is! These are the perfect combo of light, sweet, and lemon. You can add more zest on top of course to make them prettier but they tasted o so good I had a hard time keeping Dawson away from them so he had something to bring :)

How can I have s'more if I haven't had any yet??

Its Dawson's birthday tomorrow and I decided to make him cup cakes to bring to his last day of recruit class! It also gives me an excuse to make yummy little treats and to practice this recipe for a shower I am throwing in a few weeks!
